Purim
This year Purim is on Thursday night and Friday (Feb 25 and 26). Regardless of where you are in the world, there are 4 mitzvot to do on Purim and our goal is to help you find a way to accomplish them without compromising safety or Jewish law.
1. Megillah
Hear the megillah being read live (not on zoom) from a kosher scroll, both on Thursday night and again on Friday. If you are in Berkeley, please see the link posted in the "Shabbat To Go" whatsapp group for info and to RSVP for covid-safe outdoor readings. (If you are not yet on the group and would like to be added please be in touch.) If you are not in Berkeley, please click here to find the nearest megillah reading to wherever you are located or contact us directly and we will connect you with our colleagues worldwide.
2. Eat a festive meal
On Friday, February 26th celebrate with a festive Purim meal. Wash for bread or challah, and enjoy a meal including Jewish songs, words of Torah and joyous Purim spirit. Note: When Purim falls on a Friday, out of deference to the approaching Shabbat, we start the meal earlier, ideally before midday. If you will be in Berkeley, we will be distributing a Purim feast To-Go at the morning megillah reading (by RSVP).
3. Matanot L'evyonim (gifts to the needy)
On Friday, February 26th give (or set aside) money or food to at least 2 needy people. Click here for a convenient way to fulfill this mitzvah online.
4. Mishloach Manot (sending gifts to a friend)
Give a gift of 2 ready to eat foods to a friend. If you will be in Berkeley, Chabad will have packages available at the Friday megillah readings (by RSVP) to help you fulfill this mitzvah.
